If you have received a work, study or investment visa in Germany through the Phoenix team and have just arrived in the country, we will provide you with all the initial steps for your application for legal residence in Germany. However, for those who decide to do the initial residence themselves, we have described the following steps in detail and in order:

  • Registration of residence (Anmeldung)

Time: Immediately after arrival

You must register your residence with the local registry office in your state within one or two weeks of your arrival in Germany. This means declaring your new address.

– Required documents: passport, visa, rental agreement or proof of residence.

  • Applying for a tax identification number (Steuer-ID)

Time: Simultaneously with registration

After registering your residence, you will automatically receive a tax identification number. This number is important for any type of work and taxes in Germany.

  • Opening a bank account (Bankkonto)

When: Immediately after registering

Go to a local bank with your identification documents (passport and tax identification number) and proof of residence and open a bank account. This account is necessary to use your salary and pay for living expenses.

  • Health insurance coverage

When: At the same time as starting work or study

You need health insurance. You can choose between public or private insurance.

Required documents: birth certificate, educational or professional qualifications, and bank account information.

  • Registering at a university or training center (for students)

When: Before starting your study program

After receiving your tax identification number, go to the university and finalize your registration and receive your student card.

  • Setting up a tax account and assigning a job ID (for employees and employers)

When: No later than 1 month after starting work

Contact your employer or tax office to (possibly) request a tax ID.

  • Apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)

Time: If necessary, up to 3 months after arrival

If your visa is temporary, contact the immigration office to convert it into a long-term residence permit.

Documents required: Passport, educational or professional qualifications, proof of finances and insurance.

  • Getting to know the German social and legal system

Time: During your stay

At this stage, learn about local laws and regulations, workers’ rights, and social opportunities using online resources or training classes.

  • Local and cultural aspects

Time: During your stay

To reduce tension and increase comfort, get to know the local culture and customs. Participating in social groups or language classes can be helpful.

  • Preparing financial and tax documents

Time: Annual

For tax reporting, keep your documents in order and pay your taxes every year.

These steps will help you settle in Germany easily and enjoy your new life!
